Tingling in the thumb, index and middle fingers may fit carpal tunnel syndrome. Reduced sensation on the little-finger side may indicate ulnar nerve irritation. Trigger finger catches or locks, while Dupuytren can gradually pull a finger into a bent position.

The nature, duration and severity of symptoms determine which examination is needed. Clinical examination and focused tests may be sufficient; additional testing can help assess the location and severity of nerve compression.

Not always surgery, but always targeted care

Hand surgery does not mean every complaint is operated on immediately. Rest, adaptation, splinting, injection or hand therapy may be a suitable first step depending on the diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions about hand surgery

When is surgery needed for carpal tunnel syndrome?

This depends on the duration and severity of tingling, sensory loss, weakness and examination results. Surgical release may be discussed when nerve compression persists.

Is Dupuytren the same as trigger finger?

No. Dupuytren is caused by thickening of connective tissue in the palm and can bend a finger. Trigger finger is caused by narrowing around a flexor tendon and causes clicking or locking.

How quickly can I use my hand again?

This differs by condition and procedure. Light use may be possible soon, while wound healing, strength and demanding work usually take longer.
