Carpal tunnel

A carpal tunnel release creates space for the median nerve in the carpal tunnel and reduces tingling and weakness in the hand.

Let us guide you

The median nerve runs from the arm to the hand through the carpal tunnel. Compression in that tunnel can cause tingling in the fingers and, over time, weakness in small muscles of the hand.

By dividing the fibrous band that forms the roof of the tunnel, the nerve gains more space again.

When is this treatment appropriate?

Weakness in the hand

Compression of the median nerve

Confirmed diagnosis via EMG

Hand die de pols vastneemt bij carpal tunnelsyndroom.

How does the treatment proceed?

History and clinical examination often already point to carpal tunnel syndrome. EMG confirms the diagnosis.

Through a small incision in the palm, the fibrous band is divided and the nerve is released.

The wound is closed with a few sutures.

Confirm diagnosis

EMG confirms compression of the median nerve.

Open the tunnel

Through a small incision in the palm, the roof of the tunnel is divided.

Release the nerve

The nerve gains more space so symptoms can improve.

  1. Consultation

History and clinical examination often lead to the diagnosis; EMG confirms it.

  2. The procedure

The operation takes approximately 20 minutes under local anesthesia.

  3. First days

A bulky dressing around the hand is replaced after about 3 days with a smaller dressing. Keep the hand elevated.

  4. Mobilization

You may move your fingers and hand immediately after the procedure.

  5. Sutures

Sutures are removed after 10 to 14 days. Tingling and strength improve only later because nerve recovery is slow.

Frequently asked questions

Why is an EMG needed?

Electromyography confirms the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome.

When may I move my hand again?

You may mobilize your fingers and hand immediately after the procedure.

When do the tingling sensations disappear?

Tingling and any weakness improve only after some time, because nerve recovery is slow.
