Muscle relaxants (botulinum toxin) atmosphere image

Muscle relaxants (botulinum toxin)

Muscle relaxants (botulinum toxin type A) temporarily relax facial muscles so expression lines soften.

Let us guide you

Muscle relaxants are a diluted, purified form of botulinum toxin type A. The naturally derived product temporarily reduces unwanted muscle activity.

Lines form partly through muscle movement. After several years, wrinkles can remain visible even without movement, especially on the forehead, between the brows, and at the crow's feet.

At Surgiplast Clinic, we use botulinum toxin mainly for facial wrinkles, downturned mouth corners, excessive teeth grinding, and excessive underarm sweating.

When are muscle relaxants suitable?

Do you recognise one or more of these concerns? During the consultation, we assess whether botulinum toxin is appropriate.

How is the treatment performed?

A small amount is injected directly into the superficial muscles causing the wrinkle. One session is usually sufficient; occasionally a small touch-up is needed after two weeks. For underarm treatment, superficial injections are placed at the level of the sweat glands.

Depending on the number of injections, a treatment takes 5 to 10 minutes. The needle is fine, the amount small, and discomfort minimal. You feel a light stinging sensation that quickly fades.

Targeted injections

The solution is placed precisely in the muscles causing wrinkle formation. In the underarm, exactly where the sweat glands are located.

Usually one session

The muscles relax and expression lines soften. Sometimes a small touch-up follows after two weeks. Underarm sweat production decreases dramatically.

5 to 10 minutes

A short treatment with a fine needle and minimal discomfort.

  1. Consultation

We discuss the areas to be treated, the amount of product needed, and the number of zones. Prices vary per patient and are explained in advance.

  2. Treatment

Several small injections in the treatment area. The session takes 5 to 10 minutes.

  3. Immediately after

Do not rub the treated areas and avoid lying flat for the first two hours after injection. You can resume daily activities right away.

  4. Result

Maximum effect is visible after about two weeks. For most patients, results last 3 to 4 months.

  5. Follow-up

Repeat the treatment when you feel activity returning in the area. This is often after 3 to 4 months, sometimes only after 4 to 6 months. There are no known long-term side effects.

Frequently asked questions about muscle relaxants

Does the injection hurt?

Discomfort is minimal. Because of the fine needle and small amount, you mainly feel a light stinging sensation that quickly fades.

Do muscle relaxants also help with excessive sweating?

Yes. Injected locally into the skin, botulinum toxin blocks nerve stimulation of the sweat glands. The effect takes a few days to start and usually lasts 3 to 6 months, without risk to deeper muscles.

What side effects are possible?

Bruising at the injection site is rare, and more common with blood thinners. A feeling of heaviness in the upper eyelids can sometimes increase. Upper eyelid surgery can address this.

Who is not eligible?

Not during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Also not with neuromuscular conditions, certain medications (aminoglycosides, calcium channel blockers), or allergy to human albumin or botulinum toxin.

How much does a treatment cost?

Prices vary depending on the amount needed and the number of areas. We discuss this with you during the consultation.
